#GambiaDecides: Darboe’s supporters besiege streets, protest election results

Some supporters of leading opposition candidate in the Gambian presidential election, Ousainou Darboe, on Sunday, besieged the streets of Gambia to protest results of the ongoing elections.

Mr Darboe’s supporters gathered outside the compound of the opposition leader Sunday evening as the UDP candidate announced his rejection of the results.

The UDP supporters also trooped out and occupied the Pipeline area and other adjoining streets, chanting ‘Sachembo!’—meaning ‘thieves’ in the local Wollof dialect.

By 2p.m. on Sunday, the IEC had only announced 41 of the 53 constituencies with President Adama Barrow leading Mr Darboe and others comfortably.

The 2021 election is Mr Darboe’s fifth attempt to gain access to the presidency. The frontline opposition leader contested in the 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011 elections, but lost in all.

Ahead of the 2016 election, he was arrested for protesting against activist Solo Sendeng’s death in detention, and was consequently jailed.

On Saturday, Gambians trooped out to vote and many polling stations closed on time at 5p.m.

Mr Darboe and MP Halifa Sallah (PDOIS) have both pledged not to run for the presidency again.

On Sunday, 73-year-old Mr Darboe said he is consulting with his advisers on the next line of action. He, however, advised his supporters to remain calm and peaceful.

The UDP supporters remained at the entrance of Mr Darboe’s house protesting the results as of press time Sunday evening.

Many wielded placards with different inscriptions and messages demanding ‘justice’.

U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers: Falconets win 4-0 in Brazzaville

Two–time World Cup silver medallists Nigeria continued from where they left off in the second round by hammering hosts Congo 4-0 in the first leg of their FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup African qualifying third round fixture in Brazzaville on Sunday.

Goals by Mercy Idoko in the 38th minute, Flourish Sebastine (47th minute), Esther Onyenezide (50th minute, from the penalty spot) and Deborah Ajibola (55th minute) condemned Congo, conquerors of Egypt, to a near-hopeless situation in the return leg.

The girls of Chris Danjuma completely dominated proceedings at the Stade Alphonse Massamba-Debat, and could have been up earlier than the 38th minute when Mercy Idoko, who accounted for four of the 11 goals that drowned the Central African Republic, put them in front against the hosts.

To reach the third round, the Falconets had thumped their counterparts from the Central African Republic 7-0 in their first leg encounter in Douala, before wrapping things up at a stroll in Lagos, with a further four goals to the kitty.

Congo drew 1-1 with Egypt’s U20 girls in Cairo and then won the return 3-1 in Brazzaville to be eligible for the fixture with the Falconets.

The second leg will hold at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, on Saturday, December 18.

Enough is enough, Southern Kaduna youths tell bandits

Southern Kaduna youths have vowed to no longer remain quite and allow terrorists attack their communities, abduct their people and occupy their forests.

The youths under the aegis of the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) Youth Wing, told the rampaging bandits that ” enough is enough ” ,calling on  the people and residents of the area to rise up and defend themselves .

” We must defend ourselves against terrorists that have now found a safe haven in our forests,” they said.

They recalled with sadness that  the same community was attacked and people were kidnapped in July.

“One was killed in the July attack and millions of naira was paid as ransom,” they said.

The SOKAPU  youths said  the unabated sacking of their communities by terrorists was sad and must stop.

“The recent killing of two of our kinsmen and the abduction of countless others at Ungwan Gimbiya in Sabon Tasha, a town within Kaduna metropolis has left us perturbed as to the functionality of our security architecture and the readiness of government to tame the rising wave of criminality across the state and the country at large,” they said.

BREAKING: UK Bans Foreign Travellers From Nigeria Over Omicron Concerns

The United Kingdom has said Nigeria will be added to the countries on its red list as a result of the discovery of COVID-19 Omicron cases linked to it.

UK health secretary, Sajid Javid, disclosed this on Saturday in a television interview.

The South Africa National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) had on November 25, announced the discovery of 22 positive cases of the new Omicron variant.

Following the discovery, a number of countries banned travel from countries in southern Africa.

The UK had also placed a temporary ban on air travel from six southern African countries — South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia and Zimbabwe — with immediate effect to prevent importation of the variant into Britain.

According to the new protocol announced on Saturday, non-UK and non-Irish citizens who are travelling in from Nigeria will not be allowed entry into the UK.

“Over the recent days, we have learned of a significant number of growing cases linked to travel with Nigeria. There are 27 cases already in England and that’s growing. Nigeria narrows second only to South Africa in terms of cases linked to Omicron,” he said.

“So today, the government has decided to add Nigeria to the travel red list and that will be effective from 4am on Monday. This will mean that only UK residents or citizens of the UK can enter the UK from Nigeria from that point onwards, and they would have to quarantine in one of the relevant hotels.

“We’ve also decided to require pre-departure tests for all inward travellers that will be effective from 4am on Tuesday, and they’ll be required maximum of 48 hours before the departure time.”

A statement by the British High Commission also noted that the ban is temporary and “follows 21 recent cases of COVID-19 variant B.1.1.529 (Omicron) linked to Nigeria”.

The ban will also not apply to persons “staying airside and only transiting through.”
